SLAMMIN all-body band released 2005.
SLAMMIN brings down the house with lightning-fast improvisation, electrifying harmonies, blazing percussive dance, and raucous humor. Deeply rooted in the grooves of Jazz, Funk, R&B and World Music, SLAMMIN pushes a cappella music outside the box, and over the ledge.
Vocals by Bryan Dyer, Zo Ellis, Kenny Washington and Destani Wolf.
Beatboxing by Steve Hogan.
Body Music by Keith Terry.
Plus a special appearance by Vicki Randall (#8, Freedom Jazz Dance).
"Mixing jazz, reggae and techno with a funky hint of Sly and Family Stone, this body music group abandons not only convention but instruments altogether. Slammin relies exclusively on the musical potential of the human body to cook up a fresh take on old favorites such as Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder and Toots and the Maytals. The Bay Area sensation, known for its signature off-the-wall improv sessions, offers up an organic blend of a cappella, beatboxing and body music (imagine a funk-soul version of Bjork's Medulla)." - Jackie Black, GOOD TIMES
SLAMMIN's concerts are rowdy, funky, humorous, vibrant and fresh; the material -- old school, contemporary, and of the moment. Much of SLAMMIN's debut CD is improvised and live, capturing that energy. The album features these phenomenally talented vocalists playing off the other members of the band and reacting to the smallest nuances from the audience. The rhythm section lays down the ride, with Body Music throwing in a kinetic component unseen in a cappella music. As with every Crosspulse recording, the inter-culturalism and soul imbedded in the Oakland music scene is rampant.

BODY MUSIC, PART TWO
with Keith Terry
What is Body Music? Before people were hollowing logs and slapping rocks, they were using their bodies to stomp, clap, sing, snap and grunt their musical ideas. There are many traditional Body Musics in the world, from African-American Hambone and Flamenco Palmas to Sumatran Saman and Ethiopian Armpit music. Keith Terry has developed a contemporary style of Body Music based on his training as a Jazz drummer, as well as his years of intensive study and collaboration with world rhythmic systems.
Body Music: Part Two uses the techniques developed in Part One to create more complex rhythmic patterns, as well as increased coordination between hands, feet and voice. Working at an intermediate level, students explore sequencing, phasing, downbeat/offbeat and syncopation while building a four-part polyrhythm. With Evie Ladin, Namita Kapoor and Yari Mander. Includes Footage of Keith Terry in Performance.
Your 1st body music vid has enabled me to open up my rhythmicality through total body involvement. Because of that, I can now share this knowledge with everybody from theater groups, dance troups, modern dancers and beyond. I can't wait to get this new video. many thanks to you. --John Scalici, Birmingham, AL
Teachers: See website forum where you can share your original applications of Body Music to a range of academic subjects.
“Sophisticated and up-to-the-minute in its intellectual appeal, in its multicultural inspirations and in its blending of boundaries between art forms” Washington Post

KECAK: THE VOCAL CHANT OF BALI
by I Wayan Dibia
Professor I Wayan Dibia, long-time collaborator with Crosspulse Director Keith Terry (see Body Tjak), has written a seminal book on Kecak (keh-chóck), the vocal chant of Bali. I Wayan Dibia is a distinguished performer, choreographer and scholar specializing in Balinese performing arts.
Beginning in the early 1970s Dibia began to experiment with elements of traditional Kecak to create new works for a contemporary Balinese audience. These works often involve 200 to 1000 people. His innovative art works have gained high recognition and have been featured in countless important events in Indonesia and world-wide.
Kecak, or Cak, is one of Balis most well-known performing art forms. Despite the great popularity of the art form, very little has been written on the subject that would provide comprehensive information invaluable for appreciating its unique history and cultural aesthetics
There are both sacred and secular forms of Kecak. The older, ritual Kecak is used to accompany trance dance (Sanghyang), and is not dramatic. The secular Kecak the vocal chant is used to accompany, underscore and embellish dramatic performances, often stories from the Ramayana.
This book intends to provide extensive information and documentation of Kecak, including: the development of Kecak, the traditional element of its performance, the Ramayana epic as it is performed in Kecak, and some notes on new innovations and changes within the form. The book includes a list of Kecak masters and the active Kecak groups on the island.
Mr. Dibia holds an SST degree from the Dance Academy of Indonesia, Yogyakarta, and an MA and PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies in Southeast Asia Performing Arts from UCLA.
